Jewish people and Arab people both call this land home. Jewish people see it as their ancestral homeland. Many Arabs see it as an essential part of the Arab world.

For a long time, the Ottoman Empire ruled the area. After World War I, Britain took control of the land. This was called the British Mandate. In 1917, Britain said it supported a Jewish national home. This idea upset the Arab people.

As more Jewish people moved to the area, tensions grew. Many Arabs felt their identity was at risk. Fighting broke out in 1929 and again in the 1930s. In 1947, the United Nations suggested a plan to split the land. This was called the Partition Plan.

In 1948, Israel was declared a new state. This led to a large war with Arab armies. More wars happened in 1956, 1967, 1973, and 1982. Over time, leaders tried to find peace. Some signed treaties to stop the fighting.
