Holocaust denial is the false claim that Nazi Germany did not commit genocide against European Jews. During World War II, Nazi leaders and their helpers carried out a mass murder of about six million Jews. Deniers ignore huge amounts of historical evidence to support their claims. They often say the Holocaust was a fabrication or an exaggeration. Some claim the Nazi "Final Solution" was only about moving people, not killing them. Others falsely say that gas chambers were not used for mass murder.

Deniers use specific methods to try to change what we know about the past. They often start with a conclusion they already believe. Then, they ignore any facts that prove them wrong. They use the word "revisionism" to describe their work. This is a way to make themselves sound like real historians. However, real historians use revisionism to update history with new evidence. They do not reject the foundation of what actually happened.

This movement began in postwar Europe with writers like Maurice Bardèche and Paul Rassinier. In the United States, a group called the Institute for Historical Review helped spread these ideas. In some parts of the world, denial is used for political reasons. For example, some use it to attack the legitimacy of Israel. Iran is a leading state that supports these views through official conferences. In some former Eastern Bloc countries, people deny that their own citizens helped the Nazis.

Many people worked hard to protect the truth from being lost. During the war, the Nazis tried to destroy records of their crimes. Heinrich Himmler even ordered camp leaders to destroy evidence of mass murder. In 1945, General Dwight D. Eisenhower saw the concentration camps with his own eyes. He ordered many photographs to be taken of the sites. He also made sure people saw the truth of what happened there.

Important trials helped the world understand the scale of the Holocaust. The Nuremberg trials took place in Germany from 1945 to 1946. They used many documents to show the crimes of the Nazi government. Later, in 1961, Adolf Eichmann was put on trial in Israel. This trial was shown on television to people all over the world. Because of these efforts, the truth is well-documented today. Many countries, including Germany and Canada, have made Holocaust denial illegal.
