Raphael Lemkin was a brilliant lawyer who changed how the world thinks about justice. He was born in 1900 in a village called Bezwodne. His family lived on a large farm in what is now Belarus. Lemkin was very smart and could speak nine different languages. He was homeschooled by his mother, who was an intellectual and a painter. As a young man, he studied law and became very interested in how people were treated during wars. He wanted to find ways to protect groups of people from being hurt by governments.

Lemkin's ideas grew from studying history and law. As a student, he learned about the Armenian people and the harm they suffered in the Ottoman Empire. He was upset that there were no international laws to punish those responsible. He once argued that a government should not have the right to kill its own people. He believed that the suffering of many groups was part of a larger pattern in history. He studied many different languages to better understand the world. This helped him see how injustice happened in many different places.

During World War II, Lemkin's life changed very quickly. He had to flee his home in Poland to stay safe. He traveled through Sweden and eventually reached the United States in 1941. While he was safe, he lost 49 members of his own family during the Holocaust. He became a teacher at Duke University in North Carolina. While living in America, he spent a lot of time studying Nazi documents. He looked for patterns to show how they tried to destroy entire groups of people.

To describe these terrible events, Lemkin created a brand new word. In 1944, he coined the term "genocide." He made this word by joining two parts together. The first part comes from a Greek word meaning a group, like a tribe or a race. The second part comes from a word meaning killing. He used this word in his big research book called "Axis Rule in Occupied Europe." This book helped the world understand that these mass killings were a specific kind of crime.

Lemkin spent the rest of his life working for peace and fairness. He wanted to make sure there were rules to stop "future Hitlers" from causing harm. He worked with legal teams to help bring people to justice after the war. His hard work led to a major victory for the world. On December 9, 1948, the United Nations approved the Genocide Convention. This is a set of international laws based on his own ideas. Because of Lemkin, the world now has a way to name and fight against these crimes.
