Raphael Lemkin was a lawyer from Poland.

He was very smart. He could speak nine languages.

As a student, Lemkin studied how people were treated. He learned about the Armenian people. They were hurt during a war long ago. Lemkin felt there were no laws to stop this. He thought governments should not be allowed to kill their own people.

During World War II, Lemkin had to flee Poland. He moved to the United States. He saw how the Nazi party treated groups of people. This was very sad. Lemkin lost 49 members of his own family.

To help the world, he made a new word. He called it "genocide." He joined two words together. One word meant a group of people. The other word meant killing.

Lemkin worked hard to make new rules. He wanted to stop such harm from happening again. In 1948, the United Nations approved the Genocide Convention. This is a set of laws to protect groups.
