He is widely regarded as one of the medium's most influential creators. Many fans call him "The King" due to his massive contributions to comic art. Kirby was born Jacob Kurtzberg on August 28, 1917, in Manhattan, New York. His parents were Austrian-Jewish immigrants. His father worked in a garment factory. Kirby grew up on the Lower East Side and taught himself to draw. He practiced by tracing characters from existing comic strips and editorial cartoons.

Kirby's early career involved many different roles and pseudonyms. He worked for the Lincoln Newspaper Syndicate starting in 1936. During this time, he used names like Jack Curtiss for advice cartoons. He also worked at Fleischer Studios as an inbetweener. An inbetweener is an artist who draws the frames between major movements in animation. Kirby eventually settled on the pen name Jack Kirby. He chose it because it reminded him of the actor James Cagney. He worked for various companies, including Eisner & Iger, which produced comics on demand. Through them, he created science fiction and Western stories under various fake names.

A major turning point occurred when Kirby began collaborating with Joe Simon.

The two men partnered for approximately 25 years. In 1940, they created the superhero Captain America for Timely Comics. This character was an immediate success. The first issue of Captain America Comics sold out in just days. The second issue had a print run exceeding one million copies. This success established Kirby and Simon as a powerful creative team. They later moved to National Comics Publications, now known as DC Comics. There, they created the Boy Commandos and the Newsboy Legion. The Boy Commandos became a hit, selling over a million copies every month.

During World War II, Kirby's life changed when he was drafted into the U.S. Army.

He was drafted on June 7, 1943. After training in Georgia, he was assigned to the 11th Infantry Regiment. He landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy in August 1944. While serving, Kirby performed a dangerous role as a scout. A lieutenant tasked him with advancing into towns to draw reconnaissance maps and pictures. This job required him to provide visual intelligence in active combat zones.

After the war, Kirby and Simon moved into the genre of romance comics.

They created Young Romance, which was inspired by romantic-confession magazines. This move helped define a new type of comic book storytelling. Kirby also worked for publishers like Harvey Comics and Hillman Periodicals. In the 1960s, he returned to Timely's successor, Marvel Comics. This era was perhaps his most famous period of character creation. Kirby co-created many iconic figures, including the Fantastic Four, the Hulk, and Iron Man.

He also helped develop the X-Men, Thor, the Avengers, and the Black Panther.

In 1970, Kirby left Marvel for DC Comics due to disagreements over authorship credit.

At DC, he developed the ambitious Fourth World saga. This series featured the New Gods, a group of characters that remain significant in the DC Universe today. Although some of his DC series were commercially unsuccessful at the time, his ideas remained influential. Kirby later explored television animation and independent comic publishing. In 1987, he became one of the first inductees into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame. This honor recognized his immense impact on the entire industry.

Kirby's legacy extends far beyond the printed page. He has been called "the William Blake of comics" by those who study his art.

His creations provided the foundation for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Because of this connection to modern film, he was posthumously named a Disney Legend in 2017. Kirby died of heart failure in 1994 at the age of 76. He was married to Rosalind Kirby and had four children.

Today, the Jack Kirby Awards and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame honor his memory. His work continues to shape how stories are told in global media.
