The character is T'Challa, the king and protector of Wakanda. Wakanda is a fictional African nation that is highly advanced. This society is sustained by large deposits of a fictional metal called vibranium. The character serves as a symbol of both technological power and cultural heritage. He is also a primary example of the Afrofuturist aesthetic, which blends African culture with futuristic technology.

T'Challa relies on a combination of physical prowess and scientific intelligence. He gains enhanced abilities through a specific Wakandan ritual. In this ceremony, he drinks the essence of a heart-shaped herb. Beyond these superhuman traits, he is a master of hand-to-hand combat. He also possesses rigorous physical training and deep expertise in his nation's traditions. T'Challa utilizes the immense wealth and advanced technology of Wakanda to combat his enemies. He is described as one of the world's great scientists, comparable to characters like Reed Richards.

The character's history is defined by various eras and creative shifts. He first appeared in Fantastic Four #52 in July 1966.

In 1968, he became a member of the Avengers, a famous superhero team. During the 1970s, writer Don McGregor created acclaimed storylines. These stories introduced T'Challa's nemesis, Erik Killmonger, who is a rival for the Wakandan throne. McGregor also pioneered the multi-issue story arc format. Later, in the late 1990s, Christopher Priest reinvented the character. Priest emphasized Wakanda's independence and introduced the Dora Milaje, who are T'Challa's female bodyguards.

The origins of Black Panther involve different perspectives from his creators. Writer-editor Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby both claim a role in his creation. Lee stated he wanted to include more African and African American characters. He wanted to move away from stereotypes of African villages. Kirby claimed he created the character because he realized he had no Black characters in his work. He noted that he had many Black readers and wanted to be more inclusive. While their motivations are debated, both creators cited humanistic values. Kirby's original concept for the character was actually a swashbuckler named Coal Tiger.

Throughout his publication history, the character has engaged with complex social themes. Don McGregor's 1970s stories addressed the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan in Georgia. Another story dealt with the issue of apartheid in South Africa. In the 1970s, T'Challa briefly used the name "Black Leopard." He did this to avoid negative associations with the Black Panther Party. However, the name was eventually changed back to Black Panther. This change happened in The Avengers #105. T'Challa explained that he chose to eschew stereotypes rather than change his identity.

In recent years, the character has seen massive commercial and literary success. In 2016, journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates wrote a highly successful series.

His first issue became the best-selling comic book of that month. Coates's writing explored the legitimacy of the Wakandan monarchy and democratic visions. The character also transitioned successfully to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Actor Chadwick Boseman portrayed T'Challa in several major films.

These included Captain America: Civil War and the standalone Black Panther film in 2018.

The legacy of Black Panther continues to evolve through new actors and stories. Following the death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020, the mantle changed hands. In the 2022 film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Letitia Wright's character, Shuri, became the new Black Panther. This transition maintains the character's presence in global pop culture. The character's influence extends beyond comics into television, animated films, and video games. He remains a vital figure in discussing representation and the intersection of tradition and progress.
