He played a central role in transforming Timely Comics into the global multimedia powerhouse known as Marvel Comics. For two decades, Lee served as the primary creative leader of the company. He helped expand a small publishing house into a corporation that dominates both the comics and film industries. His work changed the way stories are told in popular culture. He moved superhero narratives away from simple archetypes toward complex, human experiences.

Lee's creative process relied on deep collaboration with talented artists and co-plotters.

He worked closely with legendary artists such as Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko to build new worlds. Instead of writing perfect, untouchable heroes, Lee introduced a naturalistic approach to character development. His characters possessed human flaws, such as bad tempers, vanity, or bouts of melancholy. They dealt with everyday struggles, like paying bills or managing personal relationships. This shift made the characters feel more relatable to readers. This method revolutionized the superhero genre during the 1960s.

Many iconic characters emerged from these collaborative efforts. Lee and Jack Kirby co-created the Fantastic Four in 1961, which became an immediate success.

This success led to a massive expansion of Marvel's titles. Lee and Kirby also developed the Hulk, a character based on the idea of a hero who is also a monster. Lee drew inspiration from Norse mythology to create the mighty Thor. Other famous creations include Spider-Man, the X-Men, Iron Man, and Ant-Man. He also co-created characters like Black Panther, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, and the Scarlet Witch. These figures helped build a vast, interconnected universe of stories.

Lee's professional journey began in 1939 at Timely Comics.

He started as a young assistant with very modest duties. He filled inkwells for artists, delivered lunches, and performed proofreading tasks. He also erased pencil marks from finished pages. During this time, he adopted the pseudonym "Stan Lee." He used this pen name because he felt comic books had a low social status. He hoped to eventually write "Great American Novels" without his real name being associated with comics. He eventually made the pseudonym his legal name.

Before his success in comics, Lee held many different part-time jobs. He worked as an office boy, a theater usher, and a sandwich delivery person. As a teenager, he entered a news competition hosted by the New York Herald Tribune. While he claimed to win for three weeks straight, records suggest he actually won seventh place and two honorable mentions. In 1942, Lee joined the U.S. Army to serve in the Signal Corps. He worked on communications equipment and later moved to the Training Film Division. In the Army, he was given the rare military classification of "playwright."

In the 1970s, Lee actively challenged the restrictions of the Comics Code Authority. This organization set rules for what could be printed in comics. His efforts indirectly led to changes in their formal policies. During the 1980s, he attempted to develop Marvel properties for other types of media. While some results were mixed, he continued to expand the reach of his characters. Even after retiring from Marvel in the 1990s, he remained a vital public figurehead. He became famous for making many cameo appearances in Marvel films and television shows.

Lee's legacy is recognized through numerous prestigious awards and honors. In 1994, he was inducted into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1995. In 2008, he received the National Medal of Arts from the NEA.
