Thanos is a major fictional character in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He is a powerful being from the moon Titan. He is often described as a warlord. His origins are tied to the Eternal and Deviant races. As a character, he is frequently viewed as a villain. However, many stories show that he believes his actions are justified. He has clashed with many famous heroes, including the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Thanos was created by writer and artist Jim Starlin. He first appeared in The Invincible Iron Man #55 in February 1973. Starlin drew inspiration from the New Gods series by Jack Kirby. He also used the concept of the human death drive, known as Thanatos. This concept comes from the psychologist Sigmund Freud. The character has appeared in Marvel publications for over fifty years. He has also moved into media like video games and animated series.

His biological history is quite complex. Thanos is the son of Eternals named A'lars and Sui-San. He is the brother of Eros of Titan. He is also the grandson of Kronos. Because he carries the Deviant gene, his physical appearance is different from other Eternals. This appearance caused his mother to go insane. She even attempted to kill him, but A'lars stopped her. During his school years, Thanos was actually a pacifist. He only wanted to play with his brother and his pets.

As he reached adolescence, Thanos changed significantly. He became fascinated with nihilism and entropy. He eventually fell in love with Mistress Death. In the Marvel Universe, she is the living embodiment of death. This love drove many of his later actions. He used scientific knowledge to increase his physical strength. He also used mysticism and cybernetic enhancements, which are machine parts added to a body. He even attempted to become a pirate and father many children. None of these things brought him fulfillment until he saw Mistress Death again.

One of his most famous stories is The Infinity Gauntlet, published in 1991. In this arc, Thanos gathers six Infinity Gems. He uses these gems to create a powerful glove. This makes him omnipotent, which means he has unlimited power. To impress Mistress Death, he uses the gems to kill half of the universe's population. This includes many of the universe's heroes. Although these events were later undone by Nebula and Adam Warlock, the story remains very popular. It shows the extreme scale of his power and his devotion.

Thanos has had many different roles across different eras. He debuted during the Bronze Age of comics. He has appeared in many different titles, such as Captain Marvel, Thor, and Silver Surfer. In the 1990s, he was part of the Infinity Watch alongside Adam Warlock. During this time, Warlock revealed that Thanos sometimes allowed himself to be defeated. This was because Thanos secretly felt he was not worthy of ultimate power. He has also been a major part of the Annihilation series and the Infinity Saga.

In recent years, the character has become a massive part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He was first played by Damion Poitier in the 2012 film The Avengers. Later, actor Josh Brolin played him in several major films. These include Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015). He played a central role in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). His presence in these films helped bring his comic book history to a global audience. The character continues to be explored in new ways through different writers and artists.
