He is recognized as the leader of the Æsir, which is a group of gods. His influence spans over a thousand years of history. This includes the Roman occupation of Germania and the Viking Age. Odin is a complex deity with many different roles. He is often seen as a god of warfare and the dead. Many people also associate him with wisdom and poetry. He is a subject of great interest to modern scholars.

Odin's identity is deeply tied to his ancient name.

Scholars reconstruct his original name as the Proto-Germanic theonym *Wōðanaz. This name translates to "lord of frenzy" or "leader of the possessed." The root word *wōðaz means being inspired, delirious, or raging. This suggests a connection to divine inspiration or ecstatic states. Some researchers link this to the art of poetry. Others suggest it relates to a state of divine possession. This linguistic history helps explain his many different personality traits.

In mythology, Odin has a very distinct appearance and family.

He is often described as a long-bearded old man. Most stories say he has only one eye. He reportedly sacrificed his other eye to gain great wisdom. Odin is the son of Borr and Bestla. He has brothers named Vili and Vé. He is married to the goddess Frigg. Together, they had a son named Baldr. He also fathered the god Thor with the earth-goddess Jörð. He is often accompanied by animal familiars. These include the wolves Geri and Freki. He also has two ravens named Huginn and Muninn.

Odin is also a creator in many ancient stories.

The Prose Edda describes how the world was made. Odin and his brothers killed a primordial being named Ymir. They used his body to create the physical world. Odin is also credited with giving life to humans. The first two humans were named Ask and Embla. These myths establish Odin as a foundational force in the universe. They show his power over both life and death. His actions shaped the beginning of all things.

Odin plays a major role in the end of the world. He is a god who receives slain warriors. These warriors are called the einherjar. They are brought to Valhöll, or the Hall of the Slain, in Asgard. The Poetic Edda may link him to the Valkyries. He is thought by some to be their leader. In the mythic future, a great event called Ragnarök will occur. During this time, Odin will lead the einherjar into battle. The myths say he will be killed by the wolf Fenrir. This shows his role in the cycle of destruction and rebirth.

Historical records show Odin's presence across many different cultures.

The Roman historian Tacitus wrote about Germanic gods in the 1st century. The Romans used a process called euhemerization to understand him. They identified him with the Roman god Mercury. This was likely because both were seen as wandering deities. They both held roles related to traveling or the soul. One of the earliest clear mentions of his name was found in Denmark. This was a gold bracteate from the 400s. It featured an inscription that said, "He is Odin's man."

Odin's legacy remains visible in our modern world today.

His name is even found in our weekly calendar. The English word Wednesday comes from the Old English Wōdnesdæg. This means "day of Wōden." Many other Germanic languages have similar names for this day. In modern times, the religious movement known as Heathenry venerates him. He is often a central deity in these traditions. Odin also appears frequently in modern books and movies. His many names and stories continue to capture human imagination.
