Thor is a central deity in the tradition of Germanic paganism.

He is a god associated with many natural forces. These include thunder, storms, and strong winds. He is also linked to strength and protection. For many people, such as farmers, he represented fertility. This helped ensure that crops would grow well. His name is rooted in the Proto-Germanic word *Þunraz, which means 'Thunder'.

Thor possesses several unique tools and companions that define his role. He wields a powerful hammer named Mjölnir.

To assist in combat, he wears iron gloves and carries a special staff. Thor also travels in a chariot pulled by two goats. These goats are named Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr.

A notable part of his myth involves these animals. Thor can eat the goats and then resurrect them to life.

Family connections are important in the narratives involving Thor. He is the son of the god Odin and the goddess Jörð. Through his father, he has many brothers. Thor is married to a golden-haired goddess.

He also fathered several children. These include the goddess Sif and the goddess Magni. He is also the stepfather of the god Vali. These relationships place him at the center of many mythological events.

One of the most significant themes in Thor's stories is his struggle against monsters. His most famous adversary is the Midgard serpent, Jörmungandr.

These two enemies are destined to fight a final battle. The myths foretell that both Thor and the serpent will die during this event.

Other stories show him engaged in fierce battles to protect the world. These tales highlight his role as a relentless fighter of foes.

Historical records show Thor's influence across different eras. During the Roman period, people used a process called interpretatio Romana. This meant they identified foreign gods with Roman ones. Romans often identified Thor with the god Hercules.

This was likely because both figures used powerful tools like clubs or hammers. In the Viking Age, his popularity reached very high levels. Many people wore hammer pendants as symbols of their faith. This may have been a way to show devotion during the Christianization of Scandinavia.

Archaeological evidence provides many details about his worship. In the 11th century, the chronicler Adam of Bremen described a temple in Uppsala, Sweden.

He noted a statue of Thor sitting on a triple throne. Thor was seen as the ruler of the sky and the governor of weather. In England and Sweden, runestones have been found with his name. Some stones even show pictures of him fishing for the Midgard serpent.

These stones served as ways to honor him or seek his protection.

Thor's legacy remains visible in modern language and culture. The English word Thursday comes from the Old English 'Thunor's day'.

This name is a direct link to the god. Many personal names in Scandinavia still contain his name today. His stories continue to inspire modern art and popular culture. Furthermore, some people in the modern period practice Heathenry to revive his veneration. Even centuries after his original worship, the name of the thunder god persists.
