He is known as one of the most important creators in comic history. Many people call him "The King" because of his amazing work. He grew up in New York City on the Lower East Side. His parents were immigrants from Austria. Kirby taught himself how to draw by tracing characters from comic strips. He even drew cartoons for a newspaper run by local street kids.

Kirby became a star by working with a partner named Joe Simon. They worked together for about 25 years. In 1940, they created the famous superhero Captain America for Timely Comics. This character was a huge hit and sold many copies. The two men also created a whole new style called romance comics.

They worked for many different companies like DC Comics and Harvey Comics. They even started their own small company called Mainline Publications. Kirby used different pen names early in his career, such as Jack Curtiss. He eventually chose the name Jack Kirby because it sounded like an actor.

During World War II, Kirby served in the United States Army. He was drafted in June 1943. He landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy in August 1944. While he was a soldier, he had a very special job. A lieutenant asked him to be a scout. This meant he had to move into towns to draw maps and pictures. It was a very dangerous duty for an artist to perform.
