A lieutenant tasked him with advancing into towns to draw reconnaissance maps and pictures. This job required him to provide visual intelligence in active combat zones.
After the war, Kirby and Simon moved into the genre of romance comics. 

In 1970, Kirby left Marvel for DC Comics due to disagreements over authorship credit. 
Kirby's legacy extends far beyond the printed page. He has been called "the William Blake of comics" by those who study his art. His creations provided the foundation for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Because of this connection to modern film, he was posthumously named a Disney Legend in 2017. Kirby died of heart failure in 1994 at the age of 76. He was married to Rosalind Kirby and had four children. Today, the Jack Kirby Awards and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame honor his memory. His work continues to shape how stories are told in global media.
