Instrumental

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Instrumental music is music made with instruments.

Most of the time, no one sings words. You might hear a person shout or whistle. Some songs even use nonsense words. These are still called instrumentals.

A single person can play a piece. They might play a blues guitar or a fiddle. A large group can play too. This could be a duo or a big orchestra.

Sometimes, a singer stops to let an instrument play. This part is called an interlude. If it happens at the start, it is an introduction. A special part can show off a player's skill. We call that part a solo. A percussion break is a solo for drums.

Instrumental songs can be very popular. Many have reached number one on music charts. "Stranger on the Shore" by Acker Bilk is a famous one. It is the highest selling instrumental single in the world.

This track, "Theme Q," uses a bass, drums, and guitar.
