Instrumental

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Instrumental music is music made mostly with musical instruments. It does not have people singing words. Sometimes, you might hear small sounds like a shout or a whistle. Some songs even use nonsense words or repetitive sounds. These are still called instrumentals because the instruments do the main work.

People love this music for many different reasons. It can be a way to show off great skill. It can also be a way for groups to play together.

There are many ways to make instrumental music. A composer can write it down using music notation. A musician might play it from their own mind. This happens often with blues guitarists or folk fiddle players. A single person can play a piece alone. A group can also play together. This group might be a small duo or a large orchestra.

Some groups, like big bands, are quite large.

Instrumentals can appear inside a song that has singing. If the instruments play at the start, it is an introduction. If they play in the middle, it is an interlude. Sometimes, the instruments take a break from the singing. This can be called a percussion break if drums are used.

A special part of a song is called a solo. A solo highlights the skill of one performer. You might hear a guitar solo in heavy metal music. These parts give the listener something exciting to notice.

Many instrumental songs have been very famous. They have even reached number one on music charts. "Stranger on the Shore" by Acker Bilk is a huge hit. It is the highest selling instrumental single in the world. In the United States, the "Star Wars Theme" by Meco is also a top seller.

Other famous songs include "Tequila" by The Champs. This song has people shouting the title during the music. Many different countries have produced these top hits.

Instrumentals are linked to many kinds of modern music. They are used to make remixes or mashups. DJs often use instrumental tracks in their sets. Sometimes, people use special tools to remove vocals from a song. This creates an instrumental version of a song that had singing.

You can hear instrumentals in blues, rock, and jazz. They are a big part of how we enjoy music today. They allow the instruments to tell the whole story.
