The IJssel river flows into the lake and gives it its name. Most of the water comes from this river. The rest comes from local rain and other streams. This lake is very important for the country. It works like a giant reservoir for many people.

In the past, this area was a salty sea bay. People called it the Zuiderzee. Storms from the North Sea could cause very high tides. These tides were a big threat to the land. To fix this, the government started the Zuiderzee Works. This was a huge project to build dykes and drain the bay.

They built a long wall called the Afsluitdijk to close it off. This wall connects Friesland and North Holland. It was finished in 1932.

Creating the lake changed the land around it. Between 1929 and 1967, people drained much of the water. They created new land called polders. These include the Wieringermeerpolder and the Noordoostpolder. They also made East and South Flevoland. In 1986, these three polders became the province of Flevoland.

Some parts of the lake were even split into two. A dyke called the Houtribdijk now separates the IJsselmeer from the Markermeer.

Today, the water is almost completely fresh. This happened because the river water washed away the salt. The fresh water is very helpful for Dutch boats. It stops the steel hulls from rusting too fast. It also stops things like algae and barnacles from growing on them. This means boats do not need as much toxic coating. The lake also provides water for drinking and for farms.

Many people visit the IJsselmeer for fun. You can go fishing or travel on the water. Some people enjoy seeing the wind farms on the lake. Because the lake is shallow, the nearby towns look very old and pretty. They have many historic buildings in their fishing villages. In the winter, the lake can even freeze over.
