It is also the eighth-largest natural freshwater lake in the United States. You might find it surprising that it is the second-largest lake located entirely within the lower 48 states. This is only after Lake Michigan. The name comes from the Hitchiti language. It uses words that mean "big water."

Because it is so wide, you cannot see all the way across it.

This lake is much shallower than you might think. Its average depth is only about 1.8 meters. The Kissimmee River flows into the lake from the north. This river is the main source of the water.

Many people live in the five counties that surround the water. These are Glades, Okeechobee, Martin, Palm Beach, and Hendry counties. All five of these counties actually meet at one single point near the center of the lake. This makes the area very connected.

People have lived near this water for a very long time. The Belle Glade culture lived here until about 1700 CE. They built large mounds and other earthworks in the area. Later, the Seminole people settled in southern Florida. In the 1800s, a battle was fought on the northern shore.

Some early pioneers even lived on three small islands. These islands were named Kreamer, Ritta, and Torey. They had schools and even held town elections.

Keeping the water in place has been a big job. In 1926, a large hurricane broke a levee. This caused a lot of damage and many people died. Later, in 1928, another hurricane caused massive flooding.

To help, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built the Herbert Hoover Dike. This is a huge structure that helps protect the land. It includes channels, gates, and nearly 140 miles of levees. This project was meant to stop the lake from overflowing.

The lake is useful for many different things today. It provides water for cities and for farms. It also helps keep the salt levels right in nearby estuaries. People visit the lake to see fish and wildlife.

You can even walk along the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail. This trail follows the wide dike around the water. It is a great way to see the area. The sounds of the water are also very peaceful.
