Zuiderzee Works

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Zuiderzee Works is a massive system of dams and dikes. It is one of the biggest water engineering projects ever done in the Netherlands. This project changed the shape of the country during the twentieth century. It was built to stop dangerous floods from the North Sea. It also created new land for farming. The project was so impressive that experts named it one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

To make this work, engineers had to change how the water moved. First, they built a huge dam to block the sea. This dam is called the Afsluitdijk. It separates the salty North Sea from a new lake. After the dam was closed, workers created polders. A polder is a piece of land made by damming off water and pumping it out. This way, the water is gone and dry ground is left behind.

Many people worked on this plan over a long time. An engineer named Cornelis Lely was a main leader. He introduced his big plan in 1891. He later became a government minister to help the project move forward. In 1916, a bad winter storm broke some dikes and caused floods. This event helped people realize they needed to act quickly. The Zuiderzee Act was finally passed on 14 June 1918.

Building the Afsluitdijk was a giant task. The dam is 32 km long and 90 meters wide. Workers used 23 million m3 of sand and 13.5 million m3 of glacial till. Glacial till is a material found on the bottom of the sea. They also used basalt rocks to make the base strong. About 4,000 to 5,000 workers helped build it. The dam was finally closed on 28 May 1932.

This work created many things we see today. The salty Zuiderzee became a fresh water lake called the IJsselmeer. New areas like the Noordoostpolder and Flevoland were made from the water. These polders are now home to cities like Almere and Lelystad. Some islands, like Urk, even became part of the mainland. This project shows how people can work with water to build a safe home.
