Zuiderzee Works

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Netherlands is a very low country. Much of its land is below sea level. For a long time, the sea caused many floods. To fix this, people started the Zuiderzee Works. This was a huge project to tame the sea.

An engineer named Cornelis Lely made a plan. He wanted to build a dam to block the North Sea. This dam is called the Afsluitdijk. It is 32 km long. Workers used sand and a material called glacial till. They scooped this till from the bottom of the sea. They built the dam in parts. It was finished in 1932.

The dam turned the salty sea into a fresh lake. We call this lake the IJsselmeer. After the dam was built, workers made new land. They made these areas called polders. They did this by damming parts of the lake. Then, they pumped all the water out. This made dry land for farms.
