People built dams, locks, and walls between 1954 and 1997. These parts help keep the water out. After a bad flood in 1953, the country needed a plan. They made the "Deltaplan" to keep people safe.

One part is a storm surge barrier. A storm surge barrier is a big gate. It only closes when the sea rises very high.

This keeps the water away from homes. It also lets salt water flow in and out during normal times. This helps the animals and plants living in the water.

Today, the work continues. Sea levels are rising because of global warming. This is a change in the Earth's weather.

People must make the walls higher and wider. They also try to "build with nature." This means they make new homes for fish and birds near the walls. They want to stay safe for a very long time.
