It sits in the central Netherlands. The lake borders three areas: Flevoland, North Holland, and Friesland. A river named the IJssel flows into it. This river gives the lake its name.

Long ago, this place was a sea bay. People called it the Zuiderzee. High tides and storms were a big threat. To stay safe, people built a huge wall called the Afsluitdijk. They finished it in 1932. This wall closed off the sea. The salt water washed away. Soon, the water became fresh.

The lake is very useful today. It acts like a giant water tank. It provides water for drinking and for farms. It also helps keep the water levels safe. People use the lake for fishing and travel.

You can also see wind farms on the water. Because the lake is shallow, many nearby towns have old, pretty buildings. In the winter, the water can even freeze over.
