These vans usually drive through neighborhoods during the spring and summer. They often park at places where many people gather, like beaches or parks.

Most of these vans are owned and run by just one person. Some are part of a larger group called a franchise, like Mister Softee. Many vans have a window on the side for serving customers. They also use bright decorations and menus to show their prices.

Ice cream vans use sound to let people know they are near.

Some vans use a bell or a set of bells. Other vans use a loudspeaker to play music. This music often sounds like a music box or chimes. The songs are usually short versions of folk or classical tunes. In the United States, trucks have played music since at least 1927. One famous truck, Good Humor, played a song called "Stodola Pumpa" in Los Angeles. In the United Kingdom, many vans play a song called "Greensleeves."

History shows how these vans have changed over time.

Early vans carried simple ice cream to families. This was important because many families did not own freezers back then. As freezers became more common, vans began selling novelty items like ice pops. In the United States, ice cream trucks became more common after World War II. This happened as cities grew larger and spread out. Ice cream parlors used trucks to reach customers in these new areas. They even used music boxes to make the truck feel like a parlor.

There are different ways these vehicles are built and used.

In the United Kingdom, a "hard van" only has a freezer for scoops. A "soft van" has a machine to make soft serve ice cream. In the United States, many trucks are built from step vans. Some even use small school buses to carry their goods. In Norway, two main companies lead the way. One company, Isbilen, even sells fish from its van!

Running an ice cream business can be a hard job.

In the United Kingdom, the weather can make sales very unpredictable. A heatwave might bring many customers for a few days. However, sales often drop quickly when the weather cools down. This can cause rivalry between drivers over which area they can sell in. To help, some vendors sell other things like burgers or hot dogs. This allows them to sell treats during different times of the year.
