A fire engine is a special vehicle made for firefighting.

These trucks are often modified from regular commercial vehicles. Their main job is to carry firefighters and water to an emergency. They also hold many tools for different types of rescues. Some engines focus on wildfires or helping at airports.

They are emergency vehicles that use lights and sirens. This helps them move quickly through traffic safely.

Fire engines use many ways to get noticed. They use active warnings like flashing colored lights called beacons. They also use loud sounds like sirens and air horns. Some trucks use passive warnings to be seen. This includes high contrast patterns or words like "rescue." In Europe, many use a pattern called Battenburg markings. In the United States, some trucks are lime yellow. A 2009 study found this color is easy to see in daylight.

There are many different types of fire trucks. A standard engine carries ladders and fire hoses. It might also carry thermal imaging cameras to see through smoke. An aerial apparatus uses a long boom to reach high places.

This gives a secure place for a firefighter to stand. These tools help people reach high windows or spray water.

Special jobs require even more special trucks. Wildland fire engines are small and have four-wheel drive. They can drive on rough ground to fight brush fires. Water tenders are huge trucks that carry large amounts of water.

They are helpful in rural areas without fire hydrants. Airport crash tenders are built for plane accidents. They can carry foam and move on rough ground near runways.

Firefighting tools have a very long history. Long ago, people used a small tool called a fire syringe. This was a simple way to squirt water onto flames. Around the 2nd century B.C., Ctesibius of Alexandria invented the first fire pump. Later, people used hand-pump engines to fight fires. Some of these early engines were even pulled by horses.
