Diesel fuel is a liquid used to power many machines.

It is most commonly used in heavy trucks. This fuel is special because of how it works in an engine. A diesel engine is a type of internal combustion engine. It does not use a spark to start a fire. Instead, it uses compression ignition. This means the engine squeezes air until it is very hot. Then, the fuel is sprayed into that hot air to ignite.

This process allows engines to work with great strength.

Most diesel comes from petroleum, which is oil found underground. This is often called petrodiesel. To make it, refineries use a method called fractional distillation. They heat crude oil to separate it into different parts. These parts contain carbon chains with 9 to 25 carbon atoms.

Refineries also use a process called cracking to make more fuel. This turns heavier, less useful oil into diesel. Sometimes, they add kerosene to change how thick the fuel is. This ensures the fuel flows correctly through the engine.

Other types of diesel are being made from different sources. One type is biodiesel, which comes from living things. It is made from vegetable oils or animal fats. In Europe, rapeseed oil is a common source. In the United States, people often use soybean oil.

Scientists use a process called transesterification to make it. They mix the oil with methanol to create the fuel. Another type is synthetic diesel. This can be made from natural gas using the Fischer–Tropsch process. This creates a fuel with very low sulfur.

A scientist named Rudolf Diesel invented the engine around 1892. He wanted to create a motor that could run on many things. At first, he tested crude oil from Pechelbronn. He also tried kerosene, petrol, and even lamp oil. In 1898, engines in Scotland and France used shale oil. These were used because other fuels were too expensive.

In 1900, an engine was even shown running on peanut oil. Diesel even tried a coal-dust prototype in December 1899. However, the coal dust caused the engine parts to fail.

Today, diesel must follow strict rules called standards. These ensure the fuel is high quality and safe. In the European Union, the standard is called EN 590. Most diesel in North America is now ultra-low-sulfur diesel. This type has very little sulfur in it.

People also use different colors to keep fuels separate. In the United States, diesel is often kept in yellow containers. In the United Kingdom, it is usually kept in black containers. This helps drivers avoid putting the wrong fuel in a vehicle.
