A fire engine, also called a fire truck, is a specialized vehicle designed for firefighting.

These vehicles function as essential firefighting apparatus. They are often built using a commercial vehicle chassis. This base is then upgraded and customized to meet specific firefighting requirements. The primary mission of a fire engine is to transport firefighters and water to an incident. They also carry a wide variety of equipment for firefighting operations and fire drills.

Some engines have specialized roles, such as wildfire suppression or aircraft rescue. In some regions, they even serve as emergency medical transport for paramedics or EMTs.

To ensure safety, fire engines use both active and passive warning systems. Active warnings involve flashing colored lights, often called beacons or lightbars. These attract the attention of other drivers as the truck approaches. They also use loud audible warnings like sirens and air horns. Passive warnings are visual designs meant to increase noticeability. Many modern vehicles use retroreflectors to display words like "fire" or "rescue." In Europe, many use a high-contrast pattern known as Battenburg markings. In the United States, some engines are lime yellow. A 2009 study by the U.S. Fire Administration found that fluorescent colors, like yellow-green, are easiest to spot in daylight.

A conventional fire engine serves as a versatile tool for most scenarios. It carries essential gear like ladders, fire hoses, and fire extinguishers. Firefighters also use self-contained breathing apparatus and thermal imaging cameras. Some engines are equipped with a deluge gun, or master stream, to direct heavy water streams. They may also use preconnected hose lines, known as preconnects, which stay attached to an onboard water supply. The specific tools carried depend on the department's needs. For example, metropolitan departments may carry equipment for hazardous materials. Departments near rivers might carry water rescue gear.

Aerial apparatus are specialized trucks equipped with an extendable boom. This allows firefighters to reach high locations for rescue or water spraying. One type is the turntable ladder (TL), which is mounted on a pivot. This pivot resembles a turntable, giving the vehicle its name.

These ladders often use telescoping mechanisms to increase their reach. Modern versions may use hydraulic or pneumatic systems for stability. In North America, these are used for fire suppression. In Europe, they are often used more for rescue tasks. Some modern turntable ladders even include built-in water pumping functions.

Other aerial designs provide different advantages for complex environments. A tiller truck, or tractor-drawn aerial, is a specialized turntable ladder mounted on a semi-trailer.

In the United States, these have two drivers who use separate steering wheels. This independent steering allows for much sharper turns on narrow streets. A platform truck is another type of aerial apparatus. It carries an aerial work platform, called a basket or bucket, at the end of a boom.

Some of these booms are articulating, meaning they can bend. This allows the truck to go "up and over" obstacles.

Specialized environments require even more unique vehicle designs. Wildland fire engines are smaller and have higher ground clearance for rough terrain. They often feature four-wheel drive to help with hill climbing. Some can even pump water while driving to perform "mobile attacks" on vegetation fires. For rural areas lacking hydrants, water tenders are used.

These tankers transport large amounts of water and often feature fast-drain valves. Finally, airport crash tenders are designed for aerodromes. They can move on rough terrain near runways and carry large foam tanks to fight jet fuel fires.

The history of firefighting technology shows a journey from simple tools to complex machines. Early methods included a device called a fire syringe, or squirt, used to spray water. Around the 2nd century B.C., Ctesibius of Alexandria invented the first fire pump.

Later, hand-pump engines became common, and some were even pulled by horses. Today, these machines are highly advanced. They integrate mobile computer technology, two-way radios, and sophisticated mechanical systems to protect lives and property.
