An ambulance is a specialized, medically equipped vehicle designed to transport patients to treatment facilities like hospitals.

These vehicles are vital because they do more than just move people from one place to another. They allow emergency medical services (EMS) to provide out-of-hospital medical care during the journey. This means paramedics or first responders can treat acute illnesses or injuries while in transit. To navigate through traffic quickly, ambulances are authorized to use emergency lights and sirens.

Ambulances are categorized into several functional types based on their specific roles. The most common is the emergency ambulance, which handles acute medical crises. These can be road vehicles, but they also include air ambulances like helicopters or fixed-wing aircraft.

Another type is the patient transport ambulance, often called an ambulette. These vehicles move patients to or from medical treatments, such as dialysis centers, for non-urgent care. They usually have fewer life-support tools and different staff qualifications than emergency units.

There are even more specialized versions of these vehicles for specific needs. For example, ambulance buses are large vehicles built on a bus chassis to evacuate many people during mass casualty incidents. Bariatric ambulances are designed with special tools to manage extremely obese patients.

Some cities even use psychiatric ambulances to treat mental health crises. In Norway, the "Psykebilen" was tested to see if specially trained personnel could reduce the use of force during crises. Other unique types include rapid organ recovery ambulances, which collect organs from deceased individuals to preserve them. In 2008, New York City used a $1.5 million grant to pilot one of these programs.

The history of the ambulance shows how medical transport has evolved over centuries. The word itself comes from the Latin term meaning "to walk or move about." Originally, the term referred to a moving hospital that followed an army. The Spanish forces were among the first to use ambulances for emergency transport in 1487 during the siege of Málaga.

During the American Civil War, wagons were used to convey the wounded from battlefields. Later, during the Crimean War around 1854, ambulance wagons became more common. By the 19th and 20th centuries, technological advances turned these wagons into the self-powered vehicles we see today.

Modern ambulances are built through a two-stage manufacturing process. First, a primary manufacturer produces a chassis-cab or a van, using brands like Toyota, Ford, or Mercedes-Benz.

Then, a second-stage manufacturer modifies the vehicle to add medical functionality. They might use coachbuilding, which involves building custom modifications from scratch. Alternatively, they might use a modular system, where a pre-built medical "box" is fitted onto the empty chassis.

This ensures the vehicle has the necessary interior fittings and emergency equipment.

Vehicle design must adapt to local infrastructure and environmental conditions. For example, ambulances in urban areas might use motorcycles or scooters to move through heavy traffic more quickly. In remote or mountainous areas, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) or helicopters are used to reach inaccessible places.

Even boats serve as water ambulances in areas with many canals or islands. The choice of engine is also influenced by the climate. In colder regions, gasoline is often preferred because diesel engines can be difficult to start in the cold. In warmer regions, diesel is favored for its durability and efficiency.

Safety and communication are also critical components of ambulance operations. Many modern units use two-way radios or cellular phones to contact hospitals or consult with physicians. This allows the crew to provide medical oversight even if a doctor is not on board. Fuel choices have also been driven by safety; some operators moved to diesel after gasoline-powered ambulances experienced fires in the 1980s. This happened because gasoline is more volatile than diesel. Today, the field is changing again as vehicles move toward electricity and even solar power through rooftop modules.
