Emergency medical services, or EMS, provide urgent medical care before a patient reaches a hospital.

The main goal is to provide treatment at the scene. This ensures that life-saving care begins immediately during a crisis.

The process of receiving EMS usually follows a specific sequence. First, a member of the public or an authority calls an emergency telephone number.

Once the unit arrives, the crew begins medical care on the scene. They work to stabilize the patient's condition. If the patient needs it, the crew transfers them to a vehicle.

The team then transports the patient to a definitive care location, such as a hospital emergency department.

EMS agencies use many different types of vehicles and teams. Ambulances are the primary vehicles used for transport.

Today, EMS personnel have varying levels of training and roles. In English-speaking countries, many are Emergency Medical Technicians, or EMTs.
