They also visit large distribution centers to drop off items. Drivers must check their vehicles to ensure they are safe. They look for mechanical issues before they start driving. Some drivers even help with sales or customer service. They work closely with people in warehouses to load shipments.

There are different ways people work in this job. Some people are called owner-operators. These individuals own the trucks they drive every day. They might work for one company using a contract. Others might work as independent contractors for many companies. Some owners lease trucks to buy them later. Company drivers are employees of a specific trucking firm. These drivers use trucks provided by their employer.

Some independent owners manage a small fleet of trucks. This fleet might have as few as two or three vehicles.

Drivers also choose from many different job categories. Auto haulers use special trailers to move cars. Boat haulers use low boy trailers for large boats. Dry van drivers move most goods on highways. Some trailers carry perishable goods that must stay cold. Reefer drivers use refrigerated trailers for frozen items.

Tanker drivers move liquids like milk or gasoline. They must be careful because liquids move inside the tank. This movement can change how the truck balances. Other drivers, called bullrack drivers, move cattle in double-deck trailers.

In Canada, rules change depending on your location. Drivers below the 60th parallel have a 14-hour limit. This limit includes both driving and other work duties. The European Union has rules that started in 2007. Drivers there cannot drive for more than 4.5 hours straight. They must then take a break of at least 45 minutes.

Long trips require special ways to manage the work. Interstate drivers may be away for many months. To help, companies sometimes use team drivers. These are pairs of drivers who take turns. They can drive the same truck in shifts.
