A flatbed truck is a special kind of vehicle used for big jobs. Its body is just a flat, level bed with no roof or sides.

This simple design makes loading goods very quick and easy. These trucks are great for heavy loads that are not delicate. They are also perfect for huge items that need more space than a closed truck allows. Because they are open, they can carry things that do not mind the rain.

Keeping a load steady is a very important task. Drivers must tie things down so they do not fall off during the trip. Some trucks have low sides that fold down, which are called drop-side trucks. Other trucks use steel upright posts called stanchions to hold items in place.

In the past, drivers used ropes to secure their loads. Today, they often use flat webbing straps and a tool called a ratchet. This helps them pull the straps very tight to keep everything safe.

Flatbed trucks have changed a lot over the years. In the 1980s, many flatbeds became less common on the roads. This happened because more freight moved into closed containers or boxes on pallets. These new designs were faster to load using machines called forklifts.

However, flatbeds never went away completely. They are still used for special cargo like construction steel or large pieces of lumber. They are also great for loads that need a forklift but have no loading dock.

In North America, these trailers come in many different sizes and styles. Many trailers are 48 or 53 feet long.

Some are made of heavy steel, while others are made of light aluminum. Aluminum is very light, so the truck can legally carry more weight. Some trailers use a design called a step deck. A step deck has a lower deck by about 2 feet. This helps tall loads pass safely under low bridges or tunnels.

Drivers use many clever tools to manage these large rigs. Some trailers have a bulkhead, also called a headache rack, at the front. This metal frame protects the driver if a long load slides forward during hard braking.

Drivers also watch their weight very closely. In most states, they must stay under 80,000 pounds to avoid a ticket. Some trucks even have an air scale to help them check the weight. This helps ensure the journey is safe for everyone on the road.
