Humour is the way certain experiences make us laugh or feel amused.

Most people have a sense of humour, which means they can smile or laugh at things like jokes or puns. Some people might find funny behaviour hard to understand or even strange. What we find funny often depends on many different things. These include where we live, our culture, and how old we are. Our education and intelligence can also change what we enjoy. Even the situation we are in plays a big part in our laughter.

There are many different theories about why humour exists. Some psychological theories suggest that behaving with humour is very healthy for us. Other spiritual theories might see humour as a special gift from God. Some people believe it is a deep mystery that we cannot explain. One idea is called the benign-violation theory, which was endorsed by Peter McGraw. This theory says humour happens when something seems wrong or unsettling, but also seems safe or okay.

This can help people talk to each other more easily by making social times feel less awkward.

Humour has a very long and interesting history. The word itself comes from ancient Greek medicine. Back then, doctors believed that fluids called "humours" controlled a person's health and emotions. In ancient Greece, the philosopher Plato wrote about the idea of the ridiculous. Later, Aristotle suggested that humour involves an ugliness that does not disgust us. In ancient India, the Natya Shastra described humour as one of nine important emotional responses.

These emotions were shown by actors through their performances on stage.

Different cultures have used humour in many unique ways throughout time. In the medieval Islamic world, thinkers like Al-Farabi and Avicenna studied comedy. They often linked it to Arabic poetic forms like hija, which is satirical poetry. In China, some traditions once looked down on humour as being unseemly. However, joke books with puns and wordplay have stayed popular for many centuries.

Modern Chinese humour is now shaped by many things, including the internet and cinema. In the Caribbean, some say that even in sad songs, a natural wit can shine through.

Humour can even change how we see people in social groups. This is sometimes called the social transformation model. It suggests that being funny can change how an audience views a person. For example, using self-deprecating humour can help someone feel more accepted by a new group. Research shows that many people find a sense of humour very attractive.

In many studies, people looked for humour when searching for a serious partner. While some might think funny people are less serious, humour remains a powerful way to connect with others.
