People often call it black comedy, black humor, or bleak comedy. It focuses on topics that are usually considered taboo or painful. This style aims to make people feel discomfort or think deeply. It is different from blue comedy, which focuses on nudity or bodily fluids. Some call it gallows humor when it relates to death. This specific type of joke often comes from very scary situations.

This kind of humor works by changing how we see a problem. It can act as a tool to help people cope. For example, workers like police officers and firefighters often use it. Ambulance crews, military personnel, and funeral directors use it too. These people deal with dark subjects in their daily jobs. Using humor can help them manage the stress of their work. It can even strengthen the morale of people who are being treated unfairly. By laughing at error or evil, people feel they have overcome them.

History shows that people have used this style for a very long time. Some literary critics link black comedy to the ancient Greeks. The specific term "black humor" was used by André Breton in 1935. He was a theorist who wrote a book in 1940 called Anthology of Black Humor. Breton credited the writer Jonathan Swift as a major originator of this style. Swift wrote pieces like "A Modest Proposal" in 1729. These writings used laughter to talk about very serious and cynical topics.

Many famous authors have used dark comedy in their famous works. In America, writers like Nathanael West and Vladimir Nabokov used it early on. A 1965 book edited by Bruce Jay Friedman brought the concept to more people. He named many "black humorists" like Joseph Heller and Thomas Pynchon. Other well-known names include Roald Dahl and Kurt Vonnegut. Even the comedian Lenny Bruce used a style called "sick comedy" in the late 1950s. These writers used stories and poems to portray horrific events in a funny way.

Dark humor is a natural instinct that connects to many different cultures. In Germany, there is an expression called "Galgenhumor" for jokes made before being hanged. Other languages have similar ideas, like "yellow laughing" in French. In Belgium, they use the term "green laughing." This style of humor is found in many different professional environments. A 2017 study even looked at the people who enjoy these jokes. It suggested that fans of dark humor might have higher IQs. They might also resist negative feelings more effectively than others.
