A practical joke is a physical trick played on others.

People who do these tricks are called pranksters. Most jokes aim to be lighthearted and funny. They are meant to make the victim feel silly. They are not meant to make someone feel truly hurt. A joke is different from a trick meant to steal money. In a real practical joke, the person finds out they were tricked. This helps people bond through shared laughter and humor. However, jokes can become bullying if they are meant to be cruel.

Pranksters use many different objects to create their surprises. They might use whoopee cushions or even stink bombs. Some people use clear tape or fake vomit for a gag. A joker might hang a bucket of water above a door. They can use pulleys to make the water fall. This happens when the victim opens the door.

Pranks can also happen in offices or during sleepovers. You might see a desk wrapped in aluminum foil. Someone might even fill a room with many balloons. These physical acts make the joke feel very real.

Many people have written about the art of the prank. H. Allen Smith wrote a book in 1953 called The Compleat Practical Joker. This book was a best seller in the United States and Japan. Another writer named Moira Marsh also wrote a volume about them. She found that men in the US play these gags more often.

Students often play very large and famous pranks. At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, these are called hacks.

In Canada, engineering students have a reputation for big stunts. At the University of British Columbia, they might leave a car in a strange place. They once left a Volkswagen Beetle in an unexpected spot. Engineering students at Cambridge University also placed a car on a building. In the United Kingdom, students sometimes steal traffic cones. This became so common that it was discussed in parliament. In 2002, the Fife Constabulary even offered an amnesty for stolen cones.

Some jokes are stories that people remember for years. A painter named Waldo Peirce played a long trick in Paris.

He gave a woman a large turtle as a gift. He kept swapping it for a bigger turtle. Later, he started giving her smaller and smaller turtles. This famous story became a book by Roald Dahl. You can also see pranks in movies. The film Grumpy Old Men shows neighbors playing jokes on each other. Some modern groups even record pranks to share on YouTube. These stories show how people love to play and wonder.
