Hui Shi

philosophy religion Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Hui Shi lived in China a long time ago. He was a famous thinker. He was also a leader in the state of Wei. People call him a member of the School of Names. This group of thinkers studied how we use words.

Hui Shi is known for his many paradoxes. A paradox is an idea that seems strange or impossible. One idea was about time and space. He said he could leave today and arrive yesterday. He also said that heaven and earth are equal. He believed all things in the world are one.

Hui Shi liked to use analogies. An analogy is a way to explain things by comparing them. He thought people needed these to talk to each other. He was also a friendly rival to a thinker named Zhuangzi. They often had deep talks. They even argued about what makes a person happy. They were like partners who liked to think hard. They stayed friends until they died. It is interesting to wonder how he saw the world.
