Some people live in shared housing or group homes.

In the past, rich people had large households. These homes included servants who lived there too. Today, many people in a household work to earn money. People also share chores like housework. Some people study how this work is split up. For example, some studies show women often do more housework.

Governments use special rules to define a household. In the United Kingdom, a group must share a meal every day. In the United States, people must live in separate spaces. The U.S. Census calls the person who owns or rents the home a householder.

Homes change over time. Many years ago, many homes lacked indoor toilets or hot water. Today, most homes have these things. Many homes also have tools like washing machines and cars.
