How much space is inside a large field? People use the hectare to answer that question. A hectare is a unit used to measure area, which is the amount of surface a shape covers.

You can imagine a giant square on the ground. Each side of this square is 100 metres long. This shape covers a total of 10,000 square metres.

It is a very useful size for measuring big pieces of land. Many people use it for farming, forests, and planning new towns.

The hectare belongs to a family of measurements. It is built from a smaller unit called the are. One are is a square that is 100 square metres.

Because the prefix "hecto-" means one hundred, a hectare is exactly 100 ares. There are even smaller units in this family. A centiare is just one square metre. A deciare is ten square metres. In Norway and parts of the Middle East, people use a unit called the decare. One decare is equal to 10 ares, or 1,000 square metres.

History shows us how these measurements began. In 1795, the French government gave the metric system a legal basis. They defined the metre for length and the are for land area.

Later, in 1960, the metric system was updated to become the International System of Units, or SI. During this update, the are was not officially recognized as an international unit. However, the hectare stayed important. It is now a "non-SI unit accepted for use" with the SI system. This means it is still a trusted way to measure land.

Different parts of the world use different names for land. In the United States and Myanmar, people use the acre instead. One hectare is much larger than one acre. In fact, one hectare is about 2.47 acres.

Many old names have been changed to match the hectare. In China, a unit called gongqing is the same as a hectare. In Iran, they use the jerib. In Argentina, the manzana is equal to one hectare. In Greece, people use a unit called the stremma, which is one-tenth of a hectare.

Even though we use the hectare for big areas, we can use it for very small ones too. In Mexico, people combine hectares, ares, and centiares to be very exact. They might write a measurement like 1-21-00.26 ha. This tells them exactly how much land is in a specific plot.

Using these units helps everyone agree on how much land someone owns. It helps lawyers with land deeds and helps farmers manage their crops. Whether it is a small garden or a huge forest, these numbers help us understand our world.
