Greenwich Mean Time

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Greenwich Mean Time, or GMT, is a special way to track time. It is the local mean time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London. This time is counted starting from midnight. The word "mean" in its name is very important. It refers to an annual average. Because Earth's orbit is an ellipse, the Sun does not cross the meridian at exactly noon every day. This can happen up to 16 minutes before or after noon.

How does this time system work for the whole world? Many places use GMT to set their own local time. They do this by being a certain number of hours ahead or behind GMT. For example, some places use it all year long. Ghana is one country that keeps this time all year.

Other places like Ireland change their clocks in the summer. In the United Kingdom, GMT is the legal basis for civil time. This means it is the official time used by the government.

Learning about the history of GMT shows how much it changed. Long ago, astronomers used a different way to count hours. They started their day at noon instead of midnight. This was a tradition from the work of Ptolemy. To stop people from getting confused, the name Universal Time was used in 1928. This new name made sure everyone knew the day started at midnight. In 1884, a big meeting helped make Greenwich the zero point for longitude. This helped sailors around the world find their way.

There are many important dates and facts to remember about this time. In 1847, the Railway Clearing House used GMT for trains in Great Britain. By 1848, almost all railway companies used it too. On 5 February 1924, the BBC began broadcasting time signals by radio. These signals were very helpful for people to stay on schedule. In 1972, a new standard called Coordinated Universal Time, or UTC, took over. UTC is kept steady by many atomic clocks around the world. These clocks are more stable than the Earth's own rotation.

You can see how GMT connects to the world you live in today. Even though we use UTC now, many people still call it GMT. It is like a famous name that everyone recognizes. Big groups like the BBC World Service still use the term GMT. Some countries in Africa, like Mali and Senegal, also use it. It is a tool that helps different lands work together. Without a standard time, it would be very hard to travel or communicate.
