She was a famous businesswoman and a leader in her community. Born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1510, her family was originally from Spain. Her family were Jews who had moved to Portugal to find safety. However, life became very hard for them in 1497. The King of Portugal ordered many Jews to change their religion. This was a very difficult time for her family.

Gracia married a wealthy spice trader named Francisco Mendes Benveniste in 1528. They had a secret Jewish wedding in her basement. Later, they had a public ceremony at a cathedral in Lisbon. Francisco and his brother Diogo ran a huge trading business. They traded precious items like spices and silver across Europe. When Francisco died in 1535, Gracia inherited much of his wealth. This gave her control over the family's massive business empire.

As a leader, Gracia had to be very brave. In 1536, the Portuguese Inquisition began, which made life dangerous for many people. Gracia moved to Antwerp in the Netherlands to stay safe. There, she worked as an independent business partner. She also started a secret escape network for other people. This path was called "the difficult trail." It helped hundreds of people flee from danger. They traveled by ship and then walked over the high Alps. Many people died on these mountain paths during the journey.

Gracia later moved to Venice and then to Ferrara, Italy. In Ferrara, she could finally practice her Jewish faith openly. She became a great supporter of books and learning. She helped fund the printing of important books like the Ladino Ferrara Bible in 1553.

She also used her money to help build synagogues and hospitals. In 1553, she moved to Constantinople in the Ottoman Empire. There, she lived in the Galata district and led many Jewish communities. She even organized a trade boycott to protest unfair treatment of people in Ancona.

One of her most famous acts happened in 1558. The Ottoman Sultan, Suleiman the Magnificent, gave her a lease for the city of Tiberias. This city is in a place we now call Israel. At that time, the city was mostly empty and broken. Gracia used her wealth to rebuild the city and its towns. She wanted to create a safe home for Jewish refugees. She even built a large mansion for herself there. Gracia died in 1569, leaving behind a huge legacy of help and courage.
