Building the city was a huge task for engineers. The coast had no natural bays to protect ships. To fix this, King Herod the Great built a massive artificial harbor named Sebastos.

They used a special kind of underwater concrete to make it strong. This concrete used volcanic ash called pozzolana. Workers brought this ash from a town in Italy. They even used large wooden boxes to pour the concrete under the sea. The southern breakwater was 500 meters long. The northern one was 275 meters long.

This site has a very long history. It began in the 4th century BCE as a Phoenician village. It was once called Straton's Tower.

Later, a Jewish ruler named Alexander Jannaeus captured the area. In 63 BCE, the Roman Republic took control of the region. Around 22 to 9 BCE, Herod the Great began his massive building project. He named the new city Caesarea to honor Caesar Augustus. The city grew quickly into a great center for business.

Life in the city was very busy and grand.

Since there were no rivers nearby, the city needed a way to get water. Engineers built a high-level aqueduct to carry fresh water from the Shuni springs. This path was about 7.5 km long.

Many different groups of people lived there, including Jews, Christians, and Samaritans.

Over time, the city changed many times. It was a major center for Christianity during the Byzantine period. Later, it became a smaller fishing village.

In the 11th century, Muslim rulers rebuilt its walls. Crusaders also came and made it an important port. In 1265, the Mamluks destroyed parts of it. In 1948, during a war, the remaining village was destroyed. Now, archaeologists study the ruins to learn about the past. You can still see beautiful stone columns and old mosaics today.
