The city was part of a group of five important cities called the Pentapolis. This region was so well known that it was named Cyrenaica. To the north, the city had a busy port called Apollonia. Today, the remains of the city are very large and spread over many hectares.

Because it is so special, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982.

Many different types of buildings once filled the city. You can still see the ruins of huge temples and long porches called stoas.

People used these spaces for many different parts of daily life. The city was a place of both grand religion and busy living.

Greek settlers likely founded the city in the late seventh century BC. Some stories say they came from the island of Thera because of a famine.

Other legends say the god Apollo helped a princess named Cyrene found it. The first rulers were a family of kings known as the Battiads. They grew very wealthy by trading special things. They exported horses and a medicinal plant called silphium.

This plant was so popular that it was even pictured on their coins.

Cyrene was a very important center for many different people. In the fourth century BC, it was home to a school of thinkers called the Cyrenaics. This group of philosophers was started by a man named Aristippus.

Even though the city faced hard times, like earthquakes and wars, it remained a famous place.

History shows us how much the world can change over time. The city was damaged by big earthquakes in the years 262 and 365.
