It sits along the Mediterranean Sea and stretches between the 16th and 25th meridians east. The north of the region has a green coast, while the south is much drier. This southern part is part of the vast Libyan Desert. This desert contains the Great Sand Sea and the Calanshio Sand Sea. You can also find oases like Awjila and Jaghbub in this sandy area.

The land here has many different shapes and heights. A large area of limestone tilts up from the sea. This creates the Jebel Akhdar, which is a range of hills. These hills reach a height of 882 meters. Below the hills is a level area called the Marj Plain. This plain has red soil and is good for growing crops. The weather in the Jebel Akhdar is mild and rainy in the winter. It is hot and dry during the summer months.

Many different groups have lived in Cyrenaica throughout history. The ancient Libyans were the first people recorded living there. Later, Greek settlers arrived in the seventh century BC. They founded a famous group of five cities called the Pentapolis. One of these important cities was Cyrene.

Cyrene became a great center for art and science. It was home to famous thinkers, poets, and mathematicians. The people there even grew a special herb called silphium.

Over many years, different strong lands ruled the region. The Persian army took control in 525 BC. Later, Alexander the Great arrived in 332 BC. The area eventually became part of the Roman Republic. The Romans called the region Cyrenaica. They even joined it with the island of Crete as one province.

Later, the Byzantine Empire held the land. In more recent times, Cyrenaica became an Italian colony in 1911. It was also part of the Kingdom of Libya after 1951.

Today, the region has changed many times. It has been part of different administrative divisions in Libya. In 2011, a civil war started in Cyrenaica. During this time, the National Transitional Council held much of the area. In 2012, a group called the Cyrenaica Transitional Council declared the region to be autonomous. This means they wanted to govern themselves. The history of the land is still being written today.
