The city has a very deep and natural harbor. This harbor is well-protected from the wind and waves. Some people believe it is the best natural port in northern Africa.

The land around Tobruk is mostly a hot desert. Many nomadic herdsmen live in this area. They travel between different oases to find water. To the south, there are many large cliffs called escarpments. These cliffs act like a physical barrier. They make it hard to travel between the north and south of Libya. The city is also near the Sarir oil field. An oil pipeline connects the field to a port terminal in the city.

Tobruk has a very long history. Long ago, an ancient Greek colony called Antipyrgus sat on this site. The name meant "across from Pyrgos." Later, the Romans built a fortress here to guard the frontier. The town also served as a stop for caravans traveling along the coast. During the Roman era, it was a place for Christian bishops. One known bishop was named Aemilianus. He attended a council in the year 553.

The city saw many battles during World War II. It was a very important place for both the Allies and the Axis powers. The deep harbor was vital for supplying troops in the desert. In January 1941, Allied forces took the city. Later, German and Italian forces put the city under a siege. The Australian 9th Division fought there and were called "The Rats of Tobruk."

Today, Tobruk is an important hub for many people. Merchants from Egypt and Libya meet here to trade. Travelers use the city to move between different parts of the country. It is also served by Tobruk Airport. Because of the desert, the city has a problem with saltwater in the ground. To help, a factory was built to turn sea water into fresh water. This process is called desalination. This helps the people living in the hot desert climate stay healthy.
