These ancient cities were Oea, Sabratha, and Leptis Magna. Today, the city of Tripoli is the capital of Libya. Other important cities in the region include Misrata, Zawiya, Gharyan, Khoms, Tarhuna, and Sirte.

Many different groups have ruled this land over a long time. The Phoenicians founded the city of Oea in the 7th century BC. Later, the Romans captured the area in 146 BC. The region prospered under the Roman Empire for many years. After the Western Roman Empire fell, the Vandals took control in 435. Then, the Byzantine Empire took the land back in the 530s.

In the 7th century, the Rashidun Caliphate arrived during a Muslim conquest. This started a long period of rule by various Islamic groups.

During the Middle Ages, the region changed hands many times. The Fatimid Caliphate ruled the area starting in 909. Later, the Italo-Normans invaded and made a short-lived Kingdom of Africa. The Hafsid dynasty took control in the 1200s and ruled until the 1500s. During the 16th century, wars between the Ottomans and the Habsburgs caused many changes. Eventually, the Ottoman Empire took full control of the region.

The Karamanli dynasty even ruled the area as almost independent from 1711 to 1835.

Modern history brought even more big changes to the region. Italy captured Tripolitania during the Italo-Turkish War in 1911. Between 1927 and 1934, it was even its own separate Italian colony. During World War II, many battles happened across the North African deserts. British and Allied forces fought against Italian and German troops there. After the war, the British Military Administration helped manage the land.

Italy officially gave up its claims to the land in 1947.

Libya finally became an independent country on Christmas Eve in 1951. This was the first country to gain independence through the United Nations. In 1969, a leader named Muammar Gaddafi led a coup. He overthrew King Idris and changed the government to a republic. Gaddafi used a special idea called the "Third International Theory."
