It sits near the sea. To the east, it borders the area of Cyrenaica. To the south, it sits near the Fezzan region.

The name comes from a Greek word. It means "three cities." These were the ancient cities of Oea, Sabratha, and Leptis Magna.

Today, the city of Tripoli is the capital of Libya. Other large cities include Misrata, Zawiya, and Sirte.

Many different groups have lived here. The Phoenicians founded the city of Oea long ago. Later, the Romans ruled the area. Other groups like the Vandals and the Byzantines also held the land. In the 8th century, the region was taken during a Muslim conquest.

In the 1900s, Italy made the area a colony. After World War II, the British helped manage the land. Libya finally became an independent country in 1951.
