The Ottoman Empire ruled a place called Tripoli for a long time.

This area is part of Libya today. The rule began in 1551 after Ottoman leaders took the city.

At first, a leader called a pasha ran the land. He was sent from a city called Constantinople. However, local soldiers called Janissaries held much power. They even helped collect taxes. Much of the money came from sea pirates. These pirates used ships to find wealth.

From 1711 to 1835, a family called the Karamanlis ruled. They were a local ruling family. During this time, the United States fought two wars with Tripoli. These were called the Barbary Wars.

In 1835, the Ottoman Empire took back direct control. A group called the Senussi movement helped bring order to the land. They built religious colleges to help people. The Ottoman rule lasted until 1912. That year, Italy took the land. This changed the area into what we now call Libya.
