Cyrenaica is a large and diverse region located in eastern Libya.

It sits between the 16th and 25th meridians east. The region includes the Kufra District and stretches from the Mediterranean coast to the deep Sahara. Historically, the coastal area was known as the Pentapolis, meaning "Five Cities." This name referred to a group of important ancient urban centers. Today, the region has undergone many administrative changes. It has been part of various divisions called shabiyat since 1995. In 2011, the Libyan Civil War began in this area. During that conflict, the National Transitional Council controlled much of the territory from Benghazi.

The geology of Cyrenaica is defined by a massive block of Miocene limestone. This rock tilts steeply upward from the Mediterranean Sea. It then descends gradually as it moves inland toward sea level. The landscape is divided into two distinct blocks. The first is the Jebel Akhdar, which runs parallel to the coast. This highland reaches an elevation of 882 meters. A steep escarpment separates the coast from the Marj Plain. The Marj Plain is a relatively level plateau at about 300 meters. Above this lies a dissected plateau at 700 meters. This higher area contains the highest peaks in the range.

Climate and plant life vary across the different elevations. The Jebel Akhdar has a Mediterranean climate. This means it experiences hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. The area is part of the Mediterranean woodlands and forests ecoregion. Various plant communities grow here, including forest, woodland, and oak savanna. You can find species like the juniper tree and the wild olive. The Marj Plain features red soil that is excellent for farming. For centuries, people have grown wheat and barley there. However, the forests have been shrinking. In 1976, the forest covered 500,000 hectares. By 2007, that area had decreased to 180,000 hectares. Much of this loss came from clearing land for crops.

To the south, the environment changes drastically. The southward slopes of the Jebel Akhdar transition into dry woodlands and steppe. This area sits between the Mediterranean climate and the hyper-arid Sahara. Further south lies a large depression that runs east to west. This is the Libyan Desert. It contains the Great Sand Sea and the Calanshio Sand Sea. While much of this area is very dry, there are some oases. These include Awjila and Jaghbub. The eastern part of the region was known as Marmarica in ancient times. This area is much drier than the Jebel Akhdar. In Marmarica, the Sahara Desert extends all the way to the coast.

The history of Cyrenaica is very long and complex. The ancient Libyans were the first recorded inhabitants. Later, the Libu and Meshwesh tribes interacted with the Egyptian New Kingdom. In the seventh century BC, Greek colonists arrived. They established the colony of Cyrene around 631 BC. These settlers came from the Greek island of Thera to escape famine. The city of Cyrene became a massive intellectual center. It was famous for its medical school and beautiful architecture.

The region also produced a unique herb called silphium. This plant grew only in Cyrenaica and was used as medicine. Many famous thinkers, like the mathematician Eratosthenes, lived there.

Many different empires eventually controlled the region. In 525 BC, the Persian army seized the Pentapolis. Later, Alexander the Great arrived in 332 BC. The region then passed to the Ptolemaic dynasty of Egypt. By 96 BC, it was bequeathed to the Roman Republic. The Romans called the area Cyrenaica. They organized it as a province alongside the island of Crete.

Later, the Roman administration split the area into two provinces. These were Libya Superior and Libya Inferior. The capital was eventually moved to Ptolemais following an earthquake in 365 AD. The Byzantine Empire later held the land until the Vandal Kingdom arrived.

In more recent history, Cyrenaica saw significant political shifts. It became an Italian colony in 1911. Following the formation of Italian Libya in 1934, it was one of three main provinces. After World War II, the British administered the area from 1943 until 1951. It then became part of the Kingdom of Libya. The region has always been a place of great importance due to its geography and history. Its connection to the Mediterranean and the Sahara makes it a unique part of the African continent.
