Zawiya is an important city in northwestern Libya. It sits right on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The city is located in a historic region called Tripolitania. If you travel west from the capital city, Tripoli, you will find it.

It is a very large place for the area. In 2011, about 200,000 people lived in the city. This makes it one of the biggest cities in all of Libya.

There are many important things that happen in Zawiya. The city is home to Al Zawiya University, which started in 1988. There is also an oil field nearby. Zawiya has one of the two most important oil refineries in the country. This is a large place where oil is processed.

The city also has a large stadium. People go there to play and watch football matches.

Zawiya has a very long history. A man named abd al nabi Sanhajan built the city long ago. He sought refuge with the Hafsid dynasty around 1250 AD. He and his family ruled the area for a time. Later, around 1354 AD, his descendant named abd al mawla expanded the religious institution into Kikla.

His family was even involved in fighting against the Republic of Genoa.

Because of where it sits, Zawiya is a very important location. It controls a vital road between Tripoli and the Tunisian border. This made it a site of fierce fighting during the first Libyan Civil War in 2011. The fighting was very hard for the people living there.

Many buildings, including a main mosque, were destroyed during the conflict. The city saw many changes in control between the government and the opposition forces.

Today, the city has a hot and semi-arid climate. This means the weather is often very warm and dry.

The city remains a key part of the country's economy and travel paths. It connects the capital to the rest of the region. Knowing about Zawiya helps us understand how important the coast is to Libya. It is a place where history, industry, and daily life all meet.
