Life in Zliten is busy and full of different activities. The city has modern banks and a large shopping center. For travelers, there is the Zliten Hotel to stay in. The city is also a place for learning and industry. It is home to the Al-Asmariya Islamic University, which has many different schools. Students can study arts, sciences, economics, or even dentistry there. There is also a center where people learn about engineering. To help provide water, a large plant was built to turn seawater into fresh water.

Zliten has a very deep history that stretches back many years. The name comes from the Isliten tribe, which is a branch of the Nafzawa Berbers. Long ago, this tribe lived in parts of Libya and Tunisia. There are many old Roman sites to explore in the area. You can find the Villa of Omira, which has impressive stone mosaics. There is also a castle located in Al-Jumaa. Recently, researchers used satellite images to find 278 different archaeological sites nearby. Most of these sites were used for farming a long time ago.

Food and nature are very important to the people of Zliten. The land is famous for growing olives, citrus fruits, and many palm trees. The date palms here are special because they make the best rubb. Rubb is a sweet juice made from dates. People often eat a warm dish called asida during the cold winter nights. Asida is made by boiling flour with salt. It is usually served with olive oil and that sweet date juice. This meal is often eaten to celebrate the birth of the prophet Muhammad.

The city has seen many changes through the years. It once held the Slat Abn Shaif Synagogue, which was over 900 years old. This was a very important place for Libyan Jews. Sadly, the building was destroyed in the 1980s. Zliten also faced hard times during the Libyan Civil Wars. In 2011, the city was a place of fighting between different groups. In 2016, a large attack at a police camp caused much harm. Even with these difficult moments, the city remains a central part of Libya.
