Caesarea Maritima is an ancient and medieval port city.

It sits on the Mediterranean Sea coast. Specifically, it is located on the western edge of the Sharon plain in Israel. For centuries, it served as a major intellectual and commercial hub. It was also a capital for several different regions. These included Roman Judaea, Syria Palaestina, and Palaestina Prima. Today, the site is preserved as the Caesarea National Park.

The city's origins began long before the Roman era. In the 4th century BCE, it was a Phoenician colony. This settlement was known as Straton's Tower, named after the ruler of Sidon.

In 90 BCE, the Jewish ruler Alexander Jannaeus captured the site. He wanted to grow the Hasmonean kingdom and its shipbuilding industry. The area remained a Jewish settlement for two generations. In 63 BCE, the Roman Republic annexed the region. This changed the status of the site to an autonomous city.

King Herod the Great transformed the site significantly. Between 22 and 9 BCE, he began a massive building project.

He built a large port and dedicated the town to Caesar Augustus. Because of this, the city was named Caesarea. Herod's construction turned the area into a great commercial center. By 6 BCE, it had become the headquarters for the Roman government in Palestine. The city became a seat for Roman procurators during the early Roman period.

Building the Sebastos harbor was a massive engineering feat.

The coast lacked a natural bay or protective cape. To solve this, engineers used hydraulic concrete to build breakwaters. This special concrete used pozzolana, which is a type of volcanic ash. Herod imported 24,000 cubic meters of pozzolana from Puteoli in Italy. This required at least 44 shiploads of 400 tons each. The southern breakwater reached 500 meters in length. The northern breakwater was 275 meters long. Engineers used wooden boxes to pour the concrete underwater. Some boxes were double-planked to remain buoyant while being positioned.

Life in the city was grand and highly organized.

The city featured a large theatre overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. There was also a Herodian hippodrome for sports and games.

Because the site had no local rivers or springs, it needed a water system. Engineers constructed a high-level aqueduct to bring fresh water. This aqueduct carried water from the Shuni springs. The springs were located about 7.5 km northeast of the city.

This allowed the Roman and Byzantine populations to prosper.

The city's importance changed through many different eras. During the Byzantine period, it was a major center for Christianity. Following the Muslim conquest in 640, it lost its status as a provincial capital. It was known in Arabic as Qisarya. In the 11th century, Muslim rulers re-fortified the city. Later, Crusaders conquered the site and strengthened its port. However, the Mamluks slighted the city in 1265. By the early modern period, it had become a small fishing village.

The site experienced significant changes during the 20th century. In February 1948, during the Palestine war and Nakba, the population changed. Some people fled after an attack on a bus by the Lehi group. The remainder were expelled by the Palmach. The Palmach then demolished the houses in the village.

Following these events, archaeologists began excavating the ancient ruins. They worked during the 1950s and 1960s. Today, visitors can see beautiful mosaics and stone columns.
