He lived during a time of big changes for many people. He is best known for writing books about Jewish law. These books helped organize how people lived their lives. Many people call him by special titles like Maran. He was seen as a top expert on laws. His work helped bring order to many different communities.

Karo's life was a long journey across many lands. He was born in Toledo, Spain, in 1488. When he was only four, his family left Spain. They moved to the Kingdom of Portugal. Later, they moved to Nikopolis in the Ottoman Empire. After that, he traveled to places like Salonica and Istanbul. Finally, he moved to Safed to be in the Land of Israel. He wanted to be in a sacred place to finish his work.

In Safed, Karo became a very busy teacher.

He started a school called a yeshiva. Over 200 students came there to study the Torah. He also worked with a leader named Jacob Berab. Together, they tried to bring back a special way of ordaining rabbis. This was a tradition that had been gone for 1,100 years. Even though he could not make the plan stay, he still helped many people. He became a leader that people from all over the world looked to for help.

Karo wrote many famous books during his life. His most well-known book is the Shulchan Aruch. He finished a part of it in 1555. This book was a shorter version of his other big work, the Bet Yosef. He wrote these books to help keep Jewish customs organized. He also wrote a book called Kessef Mishneh to explain older laws. These writings are still seen as masterpieces today. They helped people understand how to follow their faith correctly.

Some people believe Karo had very special experiences.

He wrote a book called Maggid Mesharim. This book is like a diary of his spiritual life. He said an angelic being visited him at night. This visitor gave him advice on how to be a good person. He also recorded these talks in his writing. Today, he is buried in the Old Cemetery in Safed. Many other famous rabbis are buried in that same place.
