Photographers and filmmakers often look for a special time of day. They call this period the golden hour.

Some people also call it the magic hour. This time happens shortly after the sun rises. It also happens just before the sun sets. During these moments, the light feels very different. The daylight looks redder and much softer than midday light.

This light is very helpful for making beautiful art.

There is a specific way this light works. When the sun is low, its rays must travel a longer path through the air. This distance makes the direct light less intense. Most of the light becomes indirect light from the sky. This process is called lighting diffusion. Because of this, more blue light is scattered away. This makes the sun appear more reddish to our eyes. The low angle of the sun also creates much longer shadows.

Scientists use numbers to describe how the color of light changes. This is called color temperature. At midday, the temperature is around 5,500 K. During the golden hour, it drops to about 3,500 K. Shortly after sunrise or before sunset, it can be around 2,000 K. These numbers change based on the weather or your location. The time for the golden hour is not always one hour long. It changes depending on your latitude and the season.

Where you live changes how you see the sun. In Los Angeles, California, the sun reaches a certain height about an hour after sunrise. On March 21, 2009, that height was 11.7 degrees. On June 21, 2009, it was 10.5 degrees. In places near the Equator, this happens much faster. In far northern or southern places, it takes longer. In some seasons, the sun stays so low that the golden hour lasts all day. In Chicago, sunsets during the equinox can look amazing. People call this event Chicagohenge.

This light is perfect for many kinds of photography. Landscape photographers love the warm colors of the low sun. It makes the colors of nature look even better. Portrait photographers like it because the shadows are not too dark. This helps avoid harsh lighting problems. In the middle of the day, bright light can cause dark shadows. Photographers sometimes use a flash to fix this. Some movies use only this light to look beautiful. The 1978 film Days of Heaven was filmed almost entirely during the golden hour.
