This happens shortly after sunrise. It also happens just before sunset. During this time, the light is redder. It is also much softer than midday light. Some people call it the magic hour.

Why is the light different? The sun sits low in the sky. Its rays must travel through more air. This makes the light less intense. It also makes shadows much longer. The light is spread out. This is called diffusion. It makes the light look warm.

This light helps people take great pictures. In landscapes, the warm colors look beautiful. In portraits, the soft light is helpful. Shadows are not too dark. Bright spots are not too bright.

The time for this hour changes. It depends on where you live. It also depends on the season. In some places, the sun stays low. The golden hour can last all day! Some films use this light. One famous film is called Days of Heaven.
